김영수는 2022년에 최고의 시즌을 보내며, 제네시스 챔피언십과 시즌의 마지막 LG 시그니처 플레이어스 챔피언십에서 KPGA 코리아 투어 타이틀 두 개를 차지했습니다.
김영수는 “한국 골프 팬들과 DP 월드 투어를 연결할 수 있는 시작점이 될 수 있어서 매우 설레고 있습니다. 제가 첫 챔피언십 우승을 차지한 골프 코스에서 대회가 개최되어 다시금 좋은 추억들을 떠올릴 수 있을 것 같습니다. 제 목표는 또 한 번 이 골프 코스에서 우승이라는 결과를 만들어 내는 것입니다. 또한 많은 한국 선수들이 참가하는 국제 대회 인 만큼, 한국 선수들 중 한 명이 코리아 챔피언십의 트로피를 가져가는 것도 매우 기쁠 것 같습니다.”라고 말했습니다.
또한 이번 대회는 군 복무 이후에 돌아온 DP 월드 투어 총 3회 우승자인 왕정훈에게도 귀환의 순간이 될 수 있을 것입니다. 그리고 작년 코오롱 코리아 오픈에서 첫 번째 한국 투어 우승을 차지한 21살의 김민규도 더 많은 홈그라운드에서의 우승을 달성하기 위해 최선을 다해 경기에 임할 것으로 보입니다.
Golf-mad fans at this week’s Korea Championship Presented by Genesis are set to be treated to a showcase of world class golf from some of the brightest young DP World Tour and Korean Tour stars as the European circuit returns to the country for the first time in ten years.
A decade on from Brett Rumford overcoming a late wobble to win the Ballantine’s Championship at Blackstone Golf Club after a play-off with compatriot Marcus Fraser and Scotland’s Peter Whiteford, a new generation of top players will look to follow in the Australian’s footsteps by winning on South Korean soil.
Leading the way at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea in Incheon will be a host of Ryder Cup hopefuls, including Rasmus Højgaard and Robert MacIntyre who will be looking to impress in front of Luke Donald’s Vice Captains, Nicolas Colsaerts and Thomas Bjorn – both of whom will be playing this week.
With three DP World Tour wins before his 21st birthday, Højgaard is one of the most exciting stars to emerge from Europe in the last few years. At 18 years and 271 days old, he became the third youngest winner in DP World Tour history in just his fifth start, before adding a further two triumphs before his 21st birthday.
Meanwhile, MacIntyre, who’s most recent win came at Marco Simone Golf Club – the venue for the 2023 Ryder Cup, may be four years older than Højgaard but remains one of the brightest youngsters unearthed by the DP World Tour in recent years.
“This will be the first time I have played in Korea, and these new opportunities add to an exciting year on the DP World Tour, with a lot to play for,” said MacIntyre.
Add the likes of Rafa Cabrera Bello and Adrian Meronk, who became the first Pole to play at the Masters Tournament last month, to the mix and you’re starting to assemble a truly world class field to go up against the stars of the Korea.
The home nation’s greatest hope arguably come in the form of the KPGA’s 2022 Genesis Point Award winner Kim Yeongsu, who is certain to receive a bucket-load of support from the Korean crowds.
Kim enjoyed a career-best season in 2022, winning his first two KPGA Korean Tour titles at the Genesis Championship and the season-ending LG Signature Players Championship.
“I am excited to play a DP World Tour event in Korea and to connecting with the Korean fans,” said Kim. “Since the tournament will be held on the same course where I won my first championship, I will return to a place where I have great memories.
“My goal is to compete for the title and achieve an outstanding result. With many Korean players expected to participate, I am hoping that one of us will take home the Korea Championship trophy.”
The tournament will also be a homecoming for three-time DP World Tour winner Wang Jeunghun as he looks to continue his fine form since returning to action this season following a period of military service, while 21-year-old Kim Min-kyu will be aiming for more success on home soil after winning his first Korean Tour event at the Kolon Korea Open last year.
